Petticoat Lane is one of London’s busiest and oldest markets with over a 1000 stalls selling clothes for men women and kids.
This part of London was once the centre of clothes manufacturing, and there has been a market here for over 400 years.
Petticoat Lane Market can be found in the East End of London . It is close to Old Spitalfields Market and just to the west of Brick Lane.
Bizarrely the street Petticoat Lane does not exist – its name was considered too rude by the Victorian’s (petticoat is the name of a woman’s undergarments) and was changed to Middlesex Street in 1846.
Local Londoner’s Tip: Petticoat Lane is not as stylish as Portobello Market but if you are after cheap clothes it can\’t be beat. Leather goods are particularly good value and can be found at the Aldgate East end.
Petticoat Lane Opening Hours:
Mon – Fri: 10 – 14.30
Saturday: closed
Sunday: 9 – 14.00
Petticoat Lane market is actually split into two markets in two locations – the market on Wentworth Street runs six days a week, and the Middlesex Street market is only open on Sundays.
Both markets are closed on Saturday. (It is unusual for a London market to be shut on a Saturday, but this is due to the historical influence of the local Jewish community for whom Saturday is their sabbath and a day of rest.)
Location; Petticoat Lane market runs between Middlesex Street and Goulston Street, Spitalfields London E1 7HT
